Environmental Impact of Clothing
Did you know that fashion is responsible for 10 percent of greenhouse gas emissions and 20 percent of global wastewater, and uses more energy than the aviation and shipping sectors combined?*
New clothing and its production have a real impact on the environment. Wearing clothes that have been gently used saves an incredible amount of energy and waste. Here are some more numbers to think about :
100 billion new garments are made each year.
92 Million tons is what the world produces in textile waste each year.
60 percent of all new clothing materials actually plastic.
42 million tons of plastic waste are produced each year through textile production. This represents 9 percent of the annual micro plastic pollution added to the oceans.
87 percent of materials used to make clothing end up in landfills.
Only 1 percent of clothes are recycled into new garments.
